Polystyrene Beads Information

Information on the Polystyrene Beads.

It is not a natural material, however, there is not really any natural materials available that work well with bean bag chairs. The polystyrene beads that are used are nontoxic. It is possible for them to be a choking hazard but the materials they are made of are not toxic. The chemical makeup is carbon and hydrogen, elements that are also found in wood. Contain no CFC's (chlorofluorocarbons) and no hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC’s). They don’t experience off-gassing that may affect indoor air quality (IAQ). The American Lung Association’s Healthy House guidelines use expanded polystyrene as insulation for the foundation, walls and floors because they release no lung damaging fibers. The beads do not contain formaldehyde. They are not biodegradable but are benign to the environment and provides a stable fill material similar to earth, rock, or concrete. Like paper, when completely combusted, it gives off water vapor, carbon dioxide, and trace levels of ash.
